Success-Full

(Written collaboratively with AI, human-reviewed)

What does it truly mean to be successful?

Is it merely a title or a bank balance, or is there more to it? Let’s reframe our understanding of success and explore the concept of being “success-full”—recognizing when we have enough to meet our needs and contribute to the well-being of our communities.

Personal success is not a one-size-fits-all concept. It’s a custom-tailored suit that aligns with your individual definitions of satisfaction, stability, and growth. For me, it’s the thrill of exploring the frontiers of AI and AR at Moodle’s Research Lab, as it fuels my passion and expands my knowledge. But what about you? What truly matters to you, and how can you work towards it with purpose?

Take a moment to reflect on your personal definition of success. Is it a specific income level that allows you to live comfortably and sustainably, or is it the freedom to pursue your passions without the constant worry of financial instability? The key is to identify what “enough” means to you and use that as a guidepost for your journey.

Beyond personal achievements, let’s shift our attention to community success. When communities thrive, every individual within them benefits. It’s akin to a well-orchestrated group project where everyone contributes their unique strengths. From sustainable practices in small towns to groundbreaking innovations in bustling cities, successful communities create a supportive framework that uplifts all members.

A couple of examples of some community work with huge impact:

  • Frome, UK: This town significantly reduced emergency hospital admissions by nurturing strong community bonds, showcasing the power of social cohesion.
  • Kalamazoo, Michigan: Through collaboration between local businesses and schools, Kalamazoo funds college tuition for its graduates, exemplifying the impact of collective investment in education.

As our work hurtles towards the automation of many, if not most, jobs, what we will we, as a global community do to solve a potentially catastrophic unemployment rate?

Universal Basic Income: A Transformative Solution

Imagine a world where every individual receives a stipend sufficient to cover their basic needs, no questions asked. While it may sound like a utopian dream, UBI could easily be the next groundbreaking open-source project for humanity. It’s about establishing a foundation where everyone begins from a place of security, equipped to tackle life’s challenges without the constant fear of financial ruin.

Inspiring UBI Examples:

  1. Stockton, California, USA: The Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED) provided 125 residents with a guaranteed income of $500 per month for 18 months. Participants reported improved mental health, increased job opportunities, and a greater ability to cover unexpected expenses, showcasing the potential of UBI to alleviate poverty and improve overall well-being. 2. Maricá, Brazil: The city of Maricá implemented a basic income program called “Renda Básica de Cidadania” (Citizens’ Basic Income) in 2015, providing a monthly stipend to over 42,000 residents to reduce poverty and promote social inclusion. The funds are distributed through a local digital currency called “Mumbuca,” which can be used to purchase goods and services within the city, stimulating the local economy and empowering residents. 3. Ontario, Canada: In 2017, the province of Ontario launched a UBI pilot program, providing 4,000 low-income individuals with a guaranteed annual income of CA$16,989 for singles and CA$24,027 for couples. Although the program was prematurely canceled by a new government in 2018, participants reported significant improvements in their quality of life, including better food security, housing stability, and mental well-being, highlighting the potential of UBI to address systemic issues and support vulnerable populations. 4. GiveDirectly, East Africa: GiveDirectly has been conducting UBI experiments in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda since 2016, providing unconditional cash transfers to thousands of households. Early results indicate improved economic outcomes, increased investments in education and small businesses, and reduced stress levels among recipients, demonstrating the potential of UBI to empower communities and foster long-term development in regions facing extreme poverty. 5. Y Combinator, USA: The technology startup accelerator Y Combinator has been a vocal advocate for UBI, conducting its own pilot study in Oakland, California. The study provided 1,000 individuals with a monthly stipend of $1,000 for up to five years. While the full results are yet to be published, preliminary findings suggest that UBI can provide a safety net for people to pursue education, start businesses, and improve their overall well-being, highlighting the potential role of the tech industry in promoting and supporting UBI initiatives. Actionable Steps Towards UBI:

  1. Implement Pilot Programs: Start small and learn from UBI pilot programs to refine and scale the concept.
  2. Regulate Big Companies: Encourage or compel large corporations to adopt practices that benefit society as a whole, with their contributions funding UBI initiatives.
  3. Foster Freedom and Creativity: UBI would allow individuals to pursue their passions without the paralyzing fear of financial instability, leading to a surge in innovation and artistic expression.
  4. Streamline Welfare Systems: Simplify the complex web of welfare bureaucracy, making UBI a more efficient and accessible solution.

Being “success-full” is about redefining the metrics of success to prioritize personal fulfillment and community well-being.

By embracing and promoting concepts like UBI, we could reboot our societal systems to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. As we continue to push the boundaries of technology, let us also reimagine and reshape our understanding of success. Together, we can cultivate a society where every individual can flourish, just like the resilient succulent on my desk that reminds me daily of the power of nurturing growth. Let’s embark on this journey together, towards a “success-full” future for all.
